To meet the demand, leading supermarkets doubled up, providing more online delivery slots, increased manpower and extended hours. However, Asda has taken a different approach and has put its energy and focus into technology, using third-party delivery firms to deliver groceries even quicker than before. They have teamed up with Uber Eats and are the first large supermarket chain to sign up, offering customers a rapid delivery service to their doorstep in as little as 30 minutes. This move follows a two-year trial with Just Eat.

It is clear that major supermarket chains are looking to fulfil orders more quickly and protect their market share, but with this trial, Asda may be about to flip the industry on its head. They are offering speed, greater flexibility and access to a range of different meal solutions and essentials – this could be a real game-changer.

To begin with, the trial has been launched in Pudsey, Leeds and Barnes Hill in Birmingham, and will give customers a choice of over 300 Asda own-brand products and branded everyday items. Using the Uber Eats app, customers will shop at Asda in the same way as if ordering a takeaway. The order is handpicked in-store by Asda employees, then collected and delivered by couriers linked to the Uber Eats app. It’s a quick, contactless and cash-free approach, making it an alternative way of shopping in an ever-changing world. If the trial proves successful, Asda and Uber Eats plan to expand the service to more Asda stores later this year.
